It would be nice if you could print from the Kindle edition, you know -- pre-lab and post-lab questions.... the kind an instructor expects you to turn in. Unfortunately you cannot. I thought I'd save some paper and only print off the pages I would need to fill out and submit to the instructor, while leaving the pages I didn't need to turn in unprinted. The rationale I got for not being able to print was Amazon was protecting the content of the publisher. Ok, I get DRM -- I don't really agree with it because it severely limits the legitimate uses one might have for the content, as in this case. It's all very silly anyway -- a simple script to take screenshots of all the pages and assemble them into a pdf completely circumvents any protections the DRM is supposed to provide. There is absolutely no reason to have this as a Kindle Edition if you are unable to print from it, other than to help Jeff Bezos build a mansion in outer space. Do yourself a favor, and don't waste your time with the Kindle version.

This is a terrible workbook, which provides the bare minimum of information to walk you through the motions of doing the experiments with very limited explanations for the 'why's and 'how's. The layout and arrangement of information and questions is largely unremarkable but sometimes very confusing, and generally gives the impression of little or no editing. The questions are worded confusingly and ask about irrelevant tidbits of information.Unfortunately, if your professor requires this for class, you don't really have much of a choice.

It has tear out pages for turning in the lab assignments- the publisher's way of making it so that you can't resell? (I photocopies the assigned lab sheets and turned in the copies so I could resell the book.)There are 40 experiments- far too many for any 1 or 2 semester course. The experiments are laid out step by step and include a material list for each activity. However, the explanations and background for each activity are often lacking. Additionally, many of the labs are set up so that it is difficult to complete all activities within the time constraints of a 1.5 hour lab (when you factor in set up and clean up). They would do better to include fewer experiments and better explanations.Another note: the softcover book is so thick you cannot put it in a binder, even though the entire book is bound hole punched. I don't think it stacks up as well as Pearson.

I received the book knowing it was used before, but did not expect pages that where of complete importance to be torn out of the book. I was trying to complete a lab in class and was not able to complete the lab entirely because the pages I needed to hand in were missing from the book. When the class was over I looked through to see what other labs I would be partaking in and every single lab sheet is torn out and I now have to either buy the book new or rent it new, which will end up costing me more money. I would have abstained from renting the book if I knew it was going to be defective and do more harm than good.

If I could, I would give this product 0 stars. Most of the pages were either ripped out or written in so every time I had lab, I had to copy a classmates blank lab report and prelab section so that I could even do the work. It was a waste of money.

Well its pages missing from book, but only 36 bucks. The pages were the important pages so this book is only worth $10 dollars.

There are two lab assignments I need that are completely missing from this book. I paid extra to get the book the next day and I couldn't even get the assignments I needed. Thankfully a friend in the class was nice enough to give me a copy. I would give 0 stars if I could.

The previous reviews are spot on -- it was missing several pages -- noticeable by a quick glance through the lab book. I'm returning it and find this very inconvenient. I knew it was too good to be true -- a lab notebook rental.

Really, this series has been a bit of a mess for a while now. I used to teach the first Michael Vey book to my 8th graders and it was a huge hit. And it's a credit to Richard Paul Evans that he made Michael such an engaging character that I have stuck through the series to the end. But there are so many things going on in this final book, too many threads, too many characters, too many people that I don't care about and the introduction of some new characters that would have had a bigger impact had their existence been at least alluded to in the prior books. The ending of the book (without spoilers) is frankly just odd. And as other reviewers have noted, characters make some interesting moral choices that are not delved into more seriously. Overall, if you have read the rest of the series, read this one too, for closure, but we deserve better. Michael deserved better.

What a fantastic book to end the Michael Vey series! I know this book series was written for teens, but I have loved reading it along with my teenagers. My daughter and I were able to go to the launch party for this 7th book, where we purchased this book a few days early. We both devoured book 7 within the next 24 hours (since the 6th book left with such a cliffhanger!) We couldn't put it down since we had to find out what happened to Michael Vey! I won't spoil it for you, but I will say this: 1. Dr Hatch only gets to be worse of a bad guy, 2. Everything seems to go from bad to worse for the Electroclan, and 3. The ending is epic and I was very satisfied with how this series ended.Richard Paul Evans has written another best seller! I love that his characters are so relatable. They are real. I love that this series is "clean." I have no problems with even my young teens reading it. I also love that one of the heroes of this series is a boy that has a disability (Tourettes). As the mother of kiddos on the autism spectrum, I want to champion any series that teaches teens that they are awesome in spite of the things that make them different. Great read, great morals, and great end to the series!

After reading the first six, there were so many loose ends, which I loved, but this mess just does t cut it. There were so many potentially good moments that just fell due to how rushed the book felt, everything became so predictable, I was anticipating this, but I honestly wish Evans had taken another hear on it, as many as he needed to make it a masterpiece, there is a reason Rowling 's books got longer for all the character and plot development, which made everything worth the length. I only gave this two stars because the resolution didn't leave anything too much up in the air. Richard Paul Evans if you read this I'd like to ask you to look at this and see where you skipped important information, character details that were rich enough in previous books need to get multiplied and more intricate as you give the reader's things to assume from the characters actions. As I hope that as an author you become fearlessly unsatisfied with this finale.

This series has been an incredible, action packed journey for me. I started the series 7 years ago when the 2nd book had only just come out. Every single year I would keep re-reading the previous books while I waited for September to come and the next book to come out. I'd shared this series with all my friends and I couldn't imagine how amazing the finale would be.But it wasnt. And I really wish it was.The other books had set a certain standard that, while pretty good, was still easily surpassable.SO WHAT WAS WRONG?A lot if I'm honest. Here is the SPOILER FREE take on it.1. Plot wise it was extremely uneven. There were some parts that went waaaaaay to slowly, and the most important parts were totally rushed through. The previous books had generally had good, steady plots and storylines which made you want to finish. That was definitely not the case here.2. The author spent way too much time on introducing insignificant new characters and probably the majority of the chapters on the Tavulu resistance taking back their islands.3. Yes, there are many revelations, most of which came out of nowhere and aside from almost making no sense, had no buildup from the previous books or even the start of this one. If you're going to drop a bombshell on the readers, at least make it look like you're trying.4. I didn't feel Evans did justice to any of the main characters. They didn't have many chapters focused on them, and it didn't even feel like it was THEM. Personality wise, dialogue wise, nothing. I guess it was hard to distribute focus on so many characters (espcially all the members of the electroclan) but no excuse. When I see Torstyn having more lines than Ian, Abigail, maybe even Mckenna... thats not okay.5. This book we didn't get to see almost anyone actually using their power. It was so cool in the other books how they used their power and fought. Another reason why the book was way less exciting.5. Usually the sciency parts of this series can kinda sort of make sense if you really try....NOT in this book. Simply put, nothing made sense.5. I wasn't so satisfied with the conclusion, I had so many questions left unanswered.**********SPOILER VERSION DOWN BELOW************For all those who have read books one through six and you just want to see it end, it will at least give you closure. Not much, though. Since my bitter disappointment with Blood of Olympus which ended the percy jackson series (and along with it my respect for the author ) I've seen too many series finales falling dramatically short on every level and expectation. This will probably be the only Vey book I won't reread and I'm fine with that.********************SPOILERS************************(or for people who have now been convinced not to read the series and just want to know what happens. Thats good too.)1. for the life of me I will never understand why all the main action of the ENTIRE BOOK happened between page 290 and 299. Or close to that. SERIOUSLY? I bought the book for 9 pages of semi enjoyable reading. That is not okay.2. Biggest mistake was waiting till the end of the book to bring back Michael. He was one of my favorite characters and he gets less than a chapters worth of appearance. AND THE SERIES IS NAMED AFTER HIM.3. Michael didn't even act like michael. He sounded way too smart and had none of the sass we'd seen in the rest of the series. Michael had had such a good character arc and it was really great watching him grow throughout the series. And all that great characterization seems like it disappeared. That being said, most of the characters didn't act like themselves. Hatch's glows like Quention and Tara seemed to have transformed over night into good people. Yeah, so hatch betrayed them and all that, but they were still selfish, jaded, spoiled, violent teenagers. Cassy doesn't sound like cheeky, confident Cassy at all, not once. And all the other Glows barely had any dialogue4. When everyone sees Michael alive they're all like "hey what's up, we knew you really weren't dead" I'm referring specifically to Taylor and Ostin and honestly everyone else. Only his mother cried and reacted at all.5. No reason that made actual sense why michael survived, and it did't elaberate how it changed him at all. He got all this new power and weird abilities and the book just blips over that.6. Carl Vey. No buildup from the other books and a false alarm in book #5 = really unnecessary bad reveal. And, wasn't Michael's Mom interested in that other guy from the resitance. And it never mentions in the epilogue how it is to have his father back in his life or anything about his parents relationship now. Big miss out.7. This new glow Zara was completely unrealistic, and thats saying something for a sci-fi book. Her powers were way to powerful and unbelievable, and it didnt expain HOW it was possible for her to do that like it did with the other glows. Also, if Hatch had had her all this time, he wouldve used her a million times ago to defeat the Electroclan. She also had no backstory and what was she even doing this whole time and where was she. And did she die at the end? I couldn't tell8. Hatch's death was way too uneventful. he was an evil man who killed millions and he just gets vaporized?!?8. So apparently they just moved back to meridian after being missing and some presumed dead for who knows how long and no one bats an eye, no one calls the cops. They just went back to school?!9. ********IMPORTANT ONE******** THEY NEVER EXPLAINED WHY ONLY THOSE 17 KIDS SURVIVED AND NO ONE ELSE AND THEY LITERALLY WERE BUILDING UP TO THAT FROM BOOK ONE AND ON. I waited 7 years to hear an answer I'd never get.10. hated the epilogue. None of them sounded like themselves and it seemed too perfect and made no sense11. what happened to the elgen? Really, i wouldnt even have minded if Michael narrated what happened after the last battle in story form like many books do. At least I could've been satistfied with the ending a bit more.I probably could harp on this book a lot more but for now its enough. Definitely the worst book out of all of them and I still feel left hanging

I had read the first six books and was looking forward to the conclusion of the series. Perhaps I had built it up in my head a bit too much, but the 7th and last book seemed a bit formulaic. I kept waiting for the "twist" or unexpected tangent that seemed to come with the other books, but was not here in this one. The author seemed to be "wrapping it up" and taking care of the loose ends, which may be all some people wanted. A conclusion to the journey. I have enjoyed the series and would recommend the series. They are a great read. Lots of action and adventure across the globe. There are lessons of loyalty, courage, and self sacrifice to be learned in the series that seems to be missing in other books, and is certainly missing in TV shows and movies today.

#3,735 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Wonderful book as I expected, as all of Mr. Ellsworth’s books have been. I won’t do a plot summary as I’m sure many others will.Engrossing and fast paced, the beginning seems a bit disjointed at first, with the necessary introduction of characters. But as the plot begins to solidfy thread by thread, it really comes together into a very cohesive story. I read the second half in less than 4 hours. I couldn’t stop. The tension was so real from chapter to chapter, waiting for the next shoe to drop.I have read every book that Mr. Ellsworth has written and this one is his best so far!Disclaimer: I received an advanced copy to read, my only promise was to write an honest review.

I have been involved for some time as an Advance Reader for new Ellsworth books. Unfortunately, this time I missed the cut off for downloading the book and so I had to buy a copy. And I’m glad I did.The story opens with an FBI chase through the streets of Phoenix that ends with a raging firefight and the death and/or injury of several FBI agents. In the firefight, Special Agent Donnie Francisco kills two of the mobsters whom he had seen shooting two of his colleagues in cold blood., but unfortunately one of them was an important member of the mob, and the mob wants revenge. The family lodges a lawsuit against Francisco who employs lawyer, Thaddeus Murfee to defend him. This begins a series of events that affect the two men both together and separately, ending with Francisco being blinded in one eye and Murfee being run over and suffering multiple injuries. We also meet again Christine Murfee, Thaddeus’ wife who is also a lawyer, and Turquoise Murfee their daughter an LAPD Detective. We meet Nathan a young man whose mother is a prostitute and who asks Thaddeus for help, two rogue FBI agents, and a sheriff’s deputy who takes the law into his own hands believing he is protecting his wife and young children. So be ready for a fast ride and for a kaleidoscope of characters and locations. This is certainly Ellsworth at his best. Another new series and I look forward to reading more about Thaddeus in the books to come.

I have read the entire series of the Thaddeus Murfree thrillers and have given 5 stars on all except the last two. Flagstaff Station was by far, the worst I have read. The entire book was disjointed and hard to follow all the characters coming in and out of the plot, so much so, at the end of the book, the author had to tie up loose strings in “floating paragraphs”. John Ellsworth started as a talented writer. I hope he’s not caught up in churning out manuscripts.

I love the character of Thaddeus Murfee and John Ellsworth has an imagination that brings life to his characters. Flagstaff is worth the read. Ellsworth brings truth to the fact that corruption touches everyone whether directly or indirectly. Yes, as we already know the FBI is not exempt from corrupt agents, and lawmen who can be bought for a price. Of course the pressure from “the mob” and their money makes a bit of difference. Thaddeus is caught up in the situation and finds himself kidnapped, beaten and put to work on a road crew. I could not put this book down, couldn’t wait to see how Ellsworth has Thaddeus fight back. When the mob threatens his family is all it takes . Thaddeus gets new injuries, scars and loss of a good friend, but his family is strong and gains a new member when a little boy’s mother is sent to jail

This is the first Ellsworth book that I haven’t given a 10 in my private library rating or a 5 star on Amazon. I have read all of them. Really an interesting tale but contains violence that doesn’t add to story and seems to be for shock value only. It also tends to bad mouth police agencies some but with some of what we read and hear about, perhaps it is well deserved. In any case I can recommend it but be aware that it may offend. I do hope that John will tone it down just a bit in future tales of this series.

Not really impressed with this book lot of plot holes and useless side plot that never went anywhere, the last few books this author has written have been train wracks. ..another title changed is it Hollywood station? Flagstaff Station Thaddeus Murfee book 12 or Justice series book 1..... i'm so confused

I enjoyed the early Ellsworth. It's been churning away, and finally gone from predictable to repetitive. I hate to give a bad review because I wish I had the balls to write and applaud those who do for their efforts. Good writing enlightens the reader, ok writing entertains the reader, the best writing does both. This book does nothing in the latter category but started out well on the former. Unfortunately, it seems like the author got tired of the book and resorted to the "They all got run over by a bus." ending, thus falling down on the former as well. Too bad, I think he's got better stuff.

There were so many plots and sub-plots that it finally became impossible to follow the main story. Not worth reading.

From Publishers Weekly

Oftentimes, the best scholarship uses the investigation of one thing (such as a historical episode or a scientific anomaly) to speak to wider human and cultural truths. FletcherÂ’s study of the life of the legendary queen Nefertiti is scholarship in just this sense. A learned and intensely personal book, it spans FletcherÂ’s near-lifelong involvement with the study of Egyptian culture, from her first trip to Egypt as a teenager in 1981 to her most recent excavation in February 2003. Along the way, she provides the reader with a concise introduction to ancient Egyptian history as well as a rough guide to the shifting ideological landscape of professional Egyptology over the last 200 years. Colored by patriarchal assumptions and the personal ambitions of the men who first excavated the desert, Egyptology tends to focus on the most powerful men of ancient Egypt: kings ruling their country (and families) with unquestioned authority. This book is in part an attempt to correct such biases and challenge reigning assumptions about gender roles in ancient Egypt. Fletcher specializes in the study of "everyday" objects like hair, jewelry and clothing that are often passed over or discarded by Egyptologists. The sections of the book devoted to them offer compelling revelations about the identities of anonymous royal figures and the complex relations among and within dynasties. Ultimately, whether or not readers agree with the hypothesis Fletcher draws from her thrilling examination of the so-called Younger Woman (who she believes is Nefertiti) interred in tomb KV.35 in the Valley of Kings is irrelevant; this book is an inspiring record of a life devoted to the highest scholarship. 24 pages of color photos. I found this book absolutely wonderful. I am 73 years old, and ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated by a group of ancient people whose pictures portrayed them in wonderful clothing, beautiful jewelry and makeup, shown facing forward, but with their feet and faces turned in profile. I saw the Discovery special in which Dr. Fletcher opened KV55 and studied the three mummies who have recently been moved to the Cairo Museum. She was, and still is, convinced that the younger mummy is that of Nefertiti. However, Zahi Hawass, the director of antiquities in Egypt, is not. He believes that it may be Kiya, who supposedly is the mother of Tut and who may have died in childbirth. However, Kiya was a very young woman, while the one in the tomb that Dr. Fletcher is interested in is seemingly mid to late 30's and maybe into her 40's. Dead giveaway is the arm that was wrentched off the mummy. Kiya was not a royal, only a secondary wife, and as such she would not have been buried in the royal position, with the arm bent at the elbow and the fist up by the opposite shoulder. In spite of all the above, I do not believe Nefertii's remains may ever be found. This was a very traumatic time for Egypt, and even though Ankhenaten has been identified, his mummy is in very bad shape and the face and name on his coffin have been scourged out. Nefer's mummy may no longer even exist, or be so well hidden that it may someday be discovered only by accident. By the way, I heard it said that the most dangerous place to be on this planet is between Dr. Hawass and a television camera! And, as far as hair and wigs go, Dr. Fletcher has carved a niche for herself with her amazing studies and discoveries about the uses of wigs and hair styles and even dying and bleaching that the Egyptians used in their everyday lives. Again, this was a wonderful read and I highly recommend it to anyone who is even remotely interested in Egyptology.

This is an absolutely fabulous book. You feel you know the answer to the question - who is this woman? - but you are compelled to take each twisting step with the author until the evidence supports the conclusion that this is the long-lost Nefertiti! The author's skills in presenting this search and its mysteries is a perfect match to the subject. The fact that I have been interested in egyptology since childhood and actually walked through the Valley of the Kings and been inside many of its tombs and chambers only adds to the ability to visualize and understand the writer's detailed descriptions put in front me. I am certain anyone would find this book enjoyable and I shall look for more of her books.

interesting in parts, but also bogged down with minutiae repeatedly. Annoying that after the author goes into great detail about a particular item, she does it again a few chapters later. The author does this SEVERAL times. I couldn't decide if she was not organized enough to realize that she had already described the artifact, didn't trust us to remember that she had, or just wanted to make the book longer.

Amazing story of this search for the powerful Queen Nefertiti. Subsequent research recently has shown this person to have been Akhenatens sister and King Tutankamen's mother. This historic change in Egypt's culture is very interesting.

Would have like some photos. Figured were referenced but not found. Would recommend to all interested in ancient Egyptian s

Dr. Fletcher is an excellent writer and this book is well, worth reading. An incredibly, intriguing story. Weaving history and forensics with down-to-earth "good fun," Fletcher keeps us on the edge of our seats and leaves us wanting more.

I enjoyed this book but feel too much le to be taking notes for a midterm exam. Perhaps it's the subject, but keeping which dynasty with is appropriate BC date was hard enough. But wth the name repetition and variations I felt I needed pictures which in this Kindle edition were omitted. (WHY?). But a good story nonetheless with an almost surprise at the end.

Absolutely loved this book! What a dynamic woman was Nefertiti, and the author brings her to life in a brilliant, vivid way!

The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel, by Jasper Fforde

From The New Yorker

It's 1985 in England, at least on the calendar; the Crimean War is in its hundred-and-thirty-first year; time travel is nothing new; Japanese tourists slip in and out of Victorian novels; and the literary branch of the special police, led gamely by the beguiling Thursday Next, are pursuing Acheron Hades, who has stolen the manuscript of "Martin Chuzzlewit" and set his sights on kidnapping the character Jane Eyre, a theft that could have disastrous consequences for Brontë lovers who like their story straight. This rambunctious caper could be taken as a warning about what might happen if society considered literature really important—like, say, energy futures or accounting. Copyright © 2005 The New Yorker

Review

“Neatly delivers alternate history, Monty Pythonesque comedy skits, Grand Guignol supervillains, thwarted lovers, po-mo intertextuality, political commentary, time travel, vampires, absent-minded inventors, a hard-boiled narrator, and lots, lots more. . . . Suspend your disbelief, find a quiet corner and just surrender to the storytelling voice of the unstoppable, ever-resourceful Thursday Next.” —The Washington Post“Fforde’s imaginative novel will satiate readers looking for a Harry Potter-esque tale. . . . The Eyre Affair’s literary wonderland recalls Douglas Adams’s Hitchhikers series, the works of Lewis Carroll and Woody Allen’s The Kugelmass Episode.”—USA Today“[Thursday Next is] part Bridget Jones, part Nancy Drew, and part Dirty Harry.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times“Delightfully clever . . . Filled with clever wordplay, literary allusion and bibliowit, The Eyre Affair combines elements of Monty Python, Harry Potter, Stephen Hawking and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but its quirky charm is all its own.” —The Wall Street Journal“Jasper Fforde’s first novel, The Eyre Affair, is a spirited sendup of genre fiction—it’s part hardboiled mystery, part time-machine caper—that features a sassy, well-read ‘Special Operative in literary detection’ named Thursday Next, who will put you more in mind of Bridget Jones than Miss Marple.  Fforde delivers almost every sentence with a sly wink, and he’s got an easy way with wordplay, trivia, and inside jokes. . . . Fforde’s verve is rarely less than infectious.” —The New York Times Book Review“Jasper Fforde’s genre-busting, whoppingly imaginative first novel, The Eyre Affair, is packed with literary allusions . . . .Thanks to Fforde’s terrific imagination, this definitely will not be the winter of our discontent.” —The Miami Herald“For sheer inventiveness his book is hard to beat. The Eyre Affair is an exuberant mélange of crime, comedy and alternative history.” —Houston Chronicle“The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde could hardly be more delightful. . . . It takes a bold adventurer to play fast and loose with literature, and that’s what we have in Thursday Next and Fforde.” —Newsday“[Fforde] delivers multiple plot twists, rampant literary references and streams of wild metafictional invention in a novel that places literature at the center of the pop-cultural universe. . . . It all adds up to a brainy, cheerfully twisted adventure.” —Time Out New York “A blend of suspense and silliness, two parts fantasy (think Alice in Wonderland meet Superman), two parts absurdity (anything by Carl Hiaasen) and one part mystery (Agatha Christie meets Sue Grafton).” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch“Her name is Next. Thursday Next. And her story is as amusing and intriguing as the summary of her story told within the pages of The Eyre Affair. Next is a literary detective in a world so enamored with the written world that Shakespeare’s Richard III is staged nightly as if it were The Rocky Horror Picture Show . . . . The novel’s writing flows and the imaginative twists and turns in Next’s world are handled smoothly.” —Sun-Sentinel

#23,614 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

In this book, Jasper Fforde creates an alternative world that is often more believable (or at least, more enjoyable) than our reality. In Fforde’s creation, the dodo has been brought back to life (and is fast becoming a common pet), time travel is tricky but quite natural, and literature is paramount. The importance of literature can be summed up by several instances, only a few of which I list here:* Children trading bubble-gum cards of authors, not athletes* Will-Speak vending machines which quote a bit of Shakespeare for a small price* A performance of Richard III enacted weekly entirely by attendees* Discussions, arguments, and downright religious fervor over several issues of literature, perhaps none so strident as those surrounding the true authorship of Shakespeare’s playsPerhaps the most revealing point of the importance of literature, though, is given by the occupation of the heroine, Thursday Next. She works for Special Operations in England, specifically SpecOps 27, the Literary Detective Division. As part of her duties early on, she assists in the investigation of the theft of a first-edition Charles Dickens book. The thief becomes evident quickly — Archeron Hades — Thursday’s former college professor, and an almost comically evil bad guy (he does bad things for the sheer joy of them — any monetary advantages are merely ancillary). But the motive is not known at first. As it turns out, one of Hades’ henchmen enters the book, pulls a minor character out of the book, and kills him. As he did this to a first edition, all copies of the book are thereafter irrevocably changed to the omission of that character.Hades then threatens to start stealing other first editions and killing off major characters, thereby stripping the world of much of its great literature. Much of the remainder of the plot involves Hades’ entrance into *Jane Eyre* and Next’s attempts to foil his schemes and (hopefully) capture him.In addition to having to chase down Hades, Thursday also has to deal with the Goliath Corporation, which claims to be a benevolent weapons contractor, but in reality, has a financial stranglehold on England. Whether they’re just a pain in the neck or truly one of the bad guys remains to be seen as the book unfolds. As you can probably tell, it’s hard to classify *The Eyre Affair*. It blends so many genres — literature, mystery, detective, science fiction, fantasy, and humor. Some of the references and humor are fairly Anglo-centric — I only “got” them after some online investigations — but don’t diminish the story that much for the non-UK reader. Often this is seen in characters’ names — apparently Fforde delights in puns and plays on words — such as Thursday’s uncle Mycroft (named after Sherlock Holmes’ brother) or her boss, Braxton Hicks (named after the contractions that occur during pregnancy). Other non-name references come to mind, but they border on spoilers, so I won’t go into detail. Suffice it to say that the more well-informed you are, the more you’ll probably enjoy this book. I’d count myself as “not very”, but I still enjoyed *The Eyre Affair* immensely.

I liked this book so much in hardback I bought the Kindle too. This series of time-warped fantasy novels is riddled with literary references and side jokes that keep the reader tied in knots, not knowing whether he wants to turn the pages as fast as he can or linger as long as possible do the fun won't end. The plot revolves around the basic premise that there is a world of books which can be entered, from the real world, with predictably unpredictable results. Meanwhile in the "real" world, time travel and cloning of extinct species are only two commonplace happenings that differentiate it from that of the reader.

Think about your favorite book…the one you would live in if you could…the one you would never ever get tired of or want leave. Do you have it firmly in your mind??? Now imagine a world where others love books as much as you and they have found a way to travel inside the pages of said book OR pull characters out.THIS is a world I would love to go toTHIS is a world made amazing by things like:✘ Cloning kits for extinct species – Thursday has a pet Dodo version 1.2 you know before they started spicing in flamingos and other species.✘ Bad guys who are somewhat similar to HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED - "He has powers that are slightly baffling. That’s why we can’t say his name. I call it Rule Number One.” “His name? Why not?” “Because he can hear his own name—even whispered—over a thousand-yard radius, perhaps more. He uses it to sense our presence.”✘ Genetically sequenced bookworms that have a semi conscience hive mind and eat prepositions and poop out punctuation, more so when they get excited. - "they had just digested a recent meal of prepositions and were happily farting out apostrophes and ampersands; the air was heav'y with th'em&"✘ An uncle with wondrous and magical inventions in his basement lab including a car with a cameleon paint job, eye screen savers and a machine that takes away your memories....maybe it seems he has forgotten about it.✘ A world where people don’t talk about what is on the television so much as they debate over who really wrote the works of Shakespeare and there are a good many theories floating around on that one.✘ Plays that have cult followings like the Rocky Horror Picture show and the audience participates in the entire production.“When is the winter of our discontent?” “Now,” replied Richard with a cruel smile, “is the winter of our discontent . . .”“. . . made glorious summer by this son of York,” continued Richard, limping to the side of the stage. On the word “ summer” six hundred people placed sunglasses on and looked up at an imaginary sun.✘ Thursday also has a father whose face it seems could stop time like literally. - "My father had a face that could stop a clock. I don’t mean that he was ugly or anything; it was a phrase the ChronoGuard used to describe someone who had the power to reduce time to an ultraslow trickle."This book is for book lovers, like serious book lovers. It has a gazillion little play on words, literary references, and random shout outs to books that it was a fantastic treat for me. It would still be pretty enjoyable if you didn’t know a lot about most of the books mentioned but it is a little more fun if you are in on the hidden gems. The plot really didn’t start happening until the second half of the book but I was having such a good time with all the fantastical gadgets, references and happenings that I didn’t really care. However I totally enjoyed myself and liked the little bit of romance, chase of the bad guy and trip through the pages of Jane Eyre. I had a great time reading this and much like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy there are a lot of random happenings that end up leading down a path to the plot eventually. It isn’t something I can read everyday but when in the correct mood it is a wonderful adventure. This book wraps up nicely so that you could just stop the series here or chose to carry on.

I enjoyed it, but I can see why people didn't.It's a weird hybrid of alternate universe (a never ending Crimean War, Jane Eyre married St. John Ribvers), fantasy, time travel, and just zany in general. The literary allusions are delightful (Richard III Rocky Horror style, I love it) and the way it twists in on itself is entertaining. It moved quickly, and I particularly love the ending. The jump inside the book part doesn't occupy enough time, but it is nicely done - including the part where the heroine realizes she's made a major mistake.Looking forward to other books in the series.

A lot of the information in this has not been updated to be current with 2018. Most of the restaurant recs were misses a few are now closed. This js mostly for the Patagonia region and also Buenos Aires. The opinions in this book are also not consistent with other information available in other guide books and online
