I do not think words can describe how amazing this was without actually just telling the whole story from beginning to end. This is a book you sit down to read beginning to end, as evident by the fact that I went to bed after 1am knowing I would be up at 6am this morning. It was that amazing. The characters were deep, real, weak and strong at the same time. they had secrets and hidden lives. Even the villains had scars that caused pity to run though you This book was an excellent example of light and dark being an illusion. When you take a deeper look everything is tinted grey. When Miss Martin's secret was revealed my heart ached for her. When Lucien starts to embrace trust and hope I almost cried. And poor poor Sebastien. I could not understand how life could deal so much wrongness to one individual and I swore I would seek him out for a hug he much needed when I finished reading. The plot while super interesting promises to get even better in book two continuing the fight against demons and uncontrollable power threatening to destroy London in the next installment with Lucien's brother staring in the lead. I do have to admit I was quite curious about him when he was introduced. He seems so dark. But then nothing is as it seems in this book.I do hope Sebastien gets his own book for book three. I more than anyone I hope he gets a happy ending. I guess I shall see what the author has in store as time goes on and I continue the series.

Absolutely love this new series!! I love this author and never miss one of her books, but I'll confess I'm delighted McMaster has branched out from the vampirish society of her earlier series.Love the complex magic here, the way the characters' magic both propels and torments them, and the ingenious ways they work with each other. The demons are horrific as their layers are revealed, and the protagonists become more intriguing the more we learn about them. The hero and heroine are a very sexy combo, and the dark secrets they carry through the story are revealed in masterfully tasty tidbits.Every character, main and supporting, provoke empathy for the incredibly difficult decisions they must make and then live with.

I've actually read Shadowbound when it first was published, but had never reviewed it. With the release of the final book in The Dark Arts Trilogy now just being released, I decided to reread the first two books. I'm glad I did. I forgot how much I enjoyed Ianthe and Lucian. Bec McMaster has the ability to create these perfectly imperfect characters that just stick with you and have you hoping to catch even a glimpse of them as the series continues. Bec also is skilled at creating alternate universes that still have the essence of a given time period in clothing and mannerisms, but then the timeline and people are totally unique. Victorian England can be found in the pages, but history is refreshingly different because magic exists and is openly acknowledged. This alternate world is introduced smoothly and with detail without being exhausting. I also love that there is an interesting and unpredictable overarching storyline that has just begun. Cannot wait to reread book 2 and then dive into book 3.

3.5 stars Goodreads. I definitely ended up enjoying it more than I expected to.First of all, let me say that this book features two and a half of my least favorite plotlines: vengeance, bargain-for-sex, and .... well, to avoid spoilers, I'll just say that I correctly guessed early on just who the "Louisa" whom Ianthe was so worried for was to her. I have a massive Kindle backlog, so usually the only books I get at right after purchase are the ones I know I'll love and can't wait for (or that have really can't-stop-now samples), but this time, having chanced buying this book while it was on sale ($2.99), I wanted to find out in time for a possible refund whether the sexual content was objectionably coerced or one-sided.I was not immediately thrilled with the leads, neither how Lucien demanded the bargain nor how Ianthe revealed a manipulative side in agreeing/challenging him, but at every step when it came to the consummation, Lucien made certain that Ianthe was not just consenting but involved and aroused. There's definitely lust before affection, and Ianthe (with unusual realism) is not immediately able to set aside her serious problems enough to climax, but before long, they're coming to see and care about each other as complex individuals, some of whose issues (re. self-worth-crushing fathers) are not dissimilar. Neither Lucien nor the reader was forced to find out whether he would indeed have carried out a more cruelly vengeful interaction had she resisted, but given his reactions when he even briefly feared that he had hurt her physically or emotionally, I think he would have simply been forced to face sooner that his anger and hatred were less solidly founded than he chose to believe. (Vengeance is the "half" in my un-favorites count. Bedlam was a dreadful place, but even the madhouse is better than dead, and he did have to be contained at that point.)The goal is suspenseful, and far from fully resolved in this first book: identifying and stopping those who are seeking to possess a trio of dangerous relics, in order to gain power through the darkest of means. Don't be too hasty to assume anyone/anything is dead/destroyed/gone! However, it's not like one of those unsatisfying serial installments where the story just stops in the middle of things; it definitely has its own completed plot arcs. The unfolding events also came to involve a number of richly depicted characters, good, bad, and otherwise dangerous. The twisted history between Drake (the Order's Prime, Ianthe's menthor, and Lucien's biological father -- who had him committed after Lucien's legal father forced and tricked him into sending a demon to kill Drake!), Drake's former friend Tremayne, his ex-wife Miranda, and his past and present lovers, as well as Drake's reason for staying away from his two illegitimate sons for so long while also keeping them apart and in ignorance, are just as important as Lucien and Ianthe, powerful Sebastian and sweet seeress Cleo. Again, I can't say too much without spoilers.I understand why Sebastian (whose horrible life has created someone rather like a nuclear weapon going unstable) won't be *the* focus until book 3, but the teaser-type epilogue makes me eager to read on, and the excerpt from book two reassures me that it will be just as worthwhile to get to know the Order's enigmatic mage-assassin Bishop better. However, having said all that, I would be remiss if I didn't comment that I found more than a few proofreading errors, such as possessives that should be plurals, a couple subjective pronouns used as the objects of prepositions, occasionally-confusing homonyms and other wrong words, and some missing commas. They aren't numerous enough, or bad enough, to make me say the author is anything less than an excellent storyteller, but it was quite ironic to see her thanking her editor for making this manuscript "so clean". This is the first Bec McMaster book I've read in full (though I bought at least one other a while ago after reading a sample, which maybe I'll pull up now -- see my comment above re. Kindle backlog!) but I gather her earlier books tended to actually be cleaner. Hopefully this issue will be improved in Bloodbound.

SHADOWBOUND starts with a bang when Miss Ianthe Martin appears in the Earl of Rathbourne's Bedlam cell--and doesn't let up until the last page. I loved the sexy, tortured hero, the heroine with her own secrets, and the gritty London scenes. McMaster's writing is fast-paced and self-assured, and her characters come alive on the page. The chemistry between Ianthe and Rathbourne is perfect, with each fighting the inevitable until they come together in an explosive scene.I've already read the second book in the Dark Arts Series and am eagerly awaiting book #3.
