The Puritans were extremely concerned about the question of assurance of salvation, and especially as to whether or not they truly had an interest in Christ. All too often this led to looking inside themselves, which is the very WORST thing one can do (you may well find in yourself plenty of reasons why you are not a Christian at all!). Thomas Goodwin directs his readers outside of themselves and towards Christ, manifesting who he is as the Savior of His people.We see Goodwin as a true Doctor of Souls, caring for the spiritual-wellbeing of his flock.This book is truly spiritual soul-food, well worth reading. Get it not for when you are unsure of whether you are saved, but to get a beautiful picture of Christ the Savior.
Mark Jones' introduction is well worth the price of the book. It is one of the finest succinct essays on Reformed Christology in the 17th century. Thomas Goodwin is one of the most heartfelt Puritans I've read - and I mean "heartfelt" in the non-sappy way. He really impresses upon the reader an assurance of God's love for them in Christ.The only reason I give this edition four stars is the binding/printing. The book feels like it will fall apart within the next 5-10 years. Would really love to see this re-typeset (incl. Jones' intro) and put in a hardback edition.
Fabulous book. Not a breezy read but SO GOOD!
This is just excellent food for the soul. It has depth and insight into the Person and work of Christ Jesus, the only Savior. It will strengthen those who read it and help their faith to grow as they look to the Object of their Faith, King Jesus.

If you are looking for a classic of the person and work of Christ, you cannot go wrong with Goodwin.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Banner of Truth Trust Publishing in exchange for my honest review.As I read this book I was taken aback by the sheer weight and depth that was presented. Time and time again, Goodwin would keep pointing to Christ. The message was complete dependence on Jesus as the reason for my justification.Goodwin would point out that I could trust Jesus because He was human. He suffered as a human suffers. Then Goodwin would direct the reader that Jesus was God and thus is the only one to bring justification to me.This is such a marvelous work that all who read this blog should check out the website here. It will be well worth your time.
There is some gold scattered throughout this book. He makes a break case for the sufficiency of Christ's ongoing intercession for believers. It is harder to read than many of his contemporaries.
