Suzuki books: standard for stringed instruments. These are nearly identical to the famous violin studies. My one complaint is the introduction of the treble clef and third position in this book. The viola book introduces third position earlier than I have found some students are ready to learn it. The violin series doesn't require third position really until the 4th book. I supplement with another series and come back to the third position in these books when students are ready. If someone is looking to self-teach the viola, I would say this book will only help you if you already have a background in a stringed instrument.
I ordered a brand new regular purchase viola book -The package was open when we found it on the porch along the top and the cover of the book and inside on the envelope has some sorts vascaline smelling sticky stuff all over it! I wiped the book off any need to use it anyway my sons first lesson for the year is today but gross I wore gloves and used some Clorox wipes on the outside cover. I would buy this book somewhere else.
The Suzuki books keep putting the numbers for finger placement above each note. This is really only necessary for learning deviations from first position. After completing Book 2, I have realized that I can barely read music without the numbering. Very disappointed. My skill has improved greatly but this basic function has mostly been lost, due to the brain automatically going to what is easiest. At this point, I fee like I need to go back, photocopy the pages, white out the numbers and relearn the songs.Other than that, I have enjoyed most of the songs.
This is exactly what it says it is, the Suzuki method book, so if that's what you want, that's what you get, on nice, appropriately heavy paper in a well bound book that can last through several students.
Suzuki books are a great series and I was told they are meant to be taught by a teacher. There are virtually no instructions in this book! And I was also told each book is meant to last through a years worth of teaching. I believe there are 8 books in total? I went through book 1 and used YouTube online videos to learn how the songs sound. Some videos will show you how to play it as well so you should give it a try. I just got book 2 and it looks like a lot of challenges are ahead. There are 12 songs in the book. The book is suppose to be a full year so that would be about a month for each song... that may be a little long but they do seem challenging to me so I wouldn't mind spending that much time to learn one if needed. If you want the CD you will have to pay more, this does not come with one.

There are fun songs to play in this book. I feel the length of the songs and the lack of instruction makes this too frustrating of a series for beginners.
