This is what our grandmothers' bodice rippers would have been like if they’d have been able to get away with this kind of a dark, sexy, sharp-edged story. It’s hard to find good erotic historical romances like this where both the history and the heat are equally strong (there are some authors who excel at it, though). Usually, it’s one or the other—where the historical aspect is great but the sexiness is fairly tame, or if a book has more graphic love scenes, it’s often at the expense of the history. These two books successfully pull it off, combining the historical and the erotic into a wrenching tale of scorching-hot vengeance and lust that's set in an era where men like Adam take what they want. This world continues in following books that focus on different but connected characters (like Adam’s sister), and I hope we get some glimpses of Daphne and Adam.
The Villian.Super hot, dark, and twisty historical. This book does end on a cliffhanger, but it's not brutal. I loved Adam's strength and both wanted to do him and strangle him at the same time lol. He was an alpha jerk but not without reasons. Daphne was his perfect foil and her submission to him made for an interesting dichotomy. The setting was almost a third character, you could feel the beauty and the isolation of Castle Dunnottar in Scotland, the medieval home of Adam's. Grab this book if you're in the mood for two strong characters and a battle of both mind and body. Who will win the fight in the end?4.5 stars. The DovePerfect ending for this duology, The Dove is the last book in the Villian series. When we last left off in The Villian, Daphne was ruined in both body and heart after her 30 days of submission to Adam, Lord Hartmoor to "pay" off his need for vengeance to her family. However, her spirit was very much intact. She's a strong female character that only got stronger as the series progressed. I loved her. Adam, in the end, had to choose between destroying her family thus destroying her in his thirst for retribution or realize that he needed her just as much as she needed him. Great ending to the series! If you love a dark, hot as anything, Scottish historical with nods to the bodice rippers of old, grab this series and get lost in their world.
I have no idea where I should start on this review. Should I start with the author's mind? She certainly can create scenarios that are SO detailed and rich. Should I start with the characters? Both Adam (Hart, or as I call him in my dreams, the Lord of Sex) and Daphne deserve extra time when I'm writing a review, because they were both beautifully drawn by that wonderful brain of Victoria Vale. Or maybe I should start with the story itself. The arc of this story flowed through from one book to another seamlessly. There was never any doubt what the characters were doing and why. The only thing you needed to do at the beginning was to decide just how much you wanted to slap Adam's face. But he gets his in the end, in more ways than one.Let me first tell you my opinion of the author (and I can see her flinching from clear over here, lol). She is the Queen of Regency Smut. I admire her for her ability to write erotic romance with a PLOT (gasp!). Because whether you read erotica, write erotica, or don't really like erotica, it isn't easy to write. Unless it is good, it comes off sounding like pornography. But if its written well, then it has a plot, strong characters, contains emotions, and no it isn't Tab A being inserted into Slot A. It has far too many layers for it to be that simple. Erotica must evoke all sort of emotions in the reader. You have to like what you're reading, you must be turned on by it (otherwise, what would be the sense of reading erotica?), and you have to LIKE the characters and where they are heading in the book. I have never seen a book of erotic fiction survive with no plot and unlikable characters. In fact, I'm probably the one who has written the One Star Review of books like that. These books are DARK erotica. They aren't frivolous, they're not light and airy. They are dark and they cover topics that may make some people uncomfortable. But the author was smart about it and have given you a description that is clearly stated. Dark erotica means you can't get upset with a character when they stay true to themselves and do things you might not like. And both books stay true to these characters from the first page to the last, which is doubly pleasing to a reader of this genre. These books contain everything a lover of erotic fiction wants. You have a strong, alpha male who knows exactly what he needs and what his woman needs. And a strong, courageous female, Daphne, who can keep up with him, not just in the bedroom, but in life. These books showcase a strong woman and an adorable bad boy that most readers won't be able to decide on hating or loving, or both. And steam? Mother of whatever is holy to you, this book has steam. In both The Villain and The Dove, you must be prepared for whatever Adam, Hart, Lord Hartmoor, Hunk can come up with. His imagination and his hunger for Daphne knows no limit. And you'll find Daphne is an equal to him in all ways. And in both of their cases, steam rises from your Kindle as you read.I love the bad boys, the badder the better. And I love women who are just as bad, just as strong, and just as willful as the men they love. And the Earl of Hartmoor, Adam (and believe me most of my nicknames for this guy can't be typed into an Amazon review, lol), fits my ideal bad boy image almost like a photograph. At the beginning of the Villain we see Daphne agree to 30 days with him, despite the fact that he is very honest what he wants. After that 30 days, she will be shown what her family has done to deserve his wrath. The Dove starts where The Villain ends with Daphne returning to her life in London and, by turns, shunned by The Ton and also made into a curiosity to be watched and whispered about. But Daphne being Daphne doesn't let that stop her from what she wants to do. Adam's money allows her to live comfortably and thumb her nose at the Ton, while at the same time missing Adam's presence in her life. And THAT is where I stop describing the book, because spoilers are not my style.I also have to add something here, as a caution, and as an encouragement. If your love is of erotic romance, and you find the Regency era interesting, then this box set is going to make your week. I had never read Regency romance until Ms. Vale, but this box set took a turn towards the dark that her other books did not. AND I LOVED IT. These two books were the ones that convinced me that Victoria Vale could very well be one of the most imaginative and creative Independent authors around. She does not fail to make her characters, and her stories, into something bigger than life. And these are characters that you will come to adore, because they are true to themselves. As much as I wanted to slap Adam more than once through this box set, I still loved him in the end. But you have to read the books to get the goodies. And goodies there are. If you are a lover of erotica, then I can say that Adam will be delivering them to you. ;-)
