This a handy book for people wanting more information about koine Greek vocabulary. The problem of learning a new language is rather fearsome because it involves, among other things, learning a foreign dictionary. People have observed that this task can be made much less daunting by learning only the lexical roots rather than all of their individual cases and tenses. However, it can be significantly reduced still further by learning only the cognate roots. For example, just knowing the cognate root "tith" immediately provides the cognate root of about 50 lexical entries (including tithemi, epitithemi, paratithemi, diatheki and many more.) This book provides a complete list of such cognate roots to greatly facilitate memorisation. In addition to this, there is a complete list of all words in the NT in the order of their occurrence, plus a complete list of all the verbs and their six major forms - especially helpful for the irregular verbs that do not follow any paradigm. Several other lists are also included such as Latin words, Aramaic words, etc. A very useful reference that worthy of close study

As probably with most others, I bought this book to improve my Greek vocabulary, intending to use the frequency list. But this book is so much more than just the frequency list. The number of vocabulary lists found here is truly impressive and a lot of them are very useful. For example, the first part of the book is on cognate words. This is an excellent way to improve one's vocabulary with minimal memorization work. It also helps a student see how words are related. The two lists mentioned above are the longest ones. There are very many shorter lists and exploring them is delightful. I was surprised the author would take the time to compile all of them. It must have been a lot of work. The list of verbs in their principal parts includes every single verb. I was very surprised and pleased to find lists for postpositives, 1st declension masculine nouns, 2nd declension feminine nouns, 2nd declension masculine and feminine nouns, 2nd declension masculine and neuter noun (just one), 3rd declension masculine and feminine nouns and even a 3rd declension masculine, feminine and neuter noun!Another wonderful thing about this book is the way words are translated into English. I often find that the English meanings given are easy to use and fit well in my attempts to translate Scripture, much more so than those given by Mounce's Analytical Lexicon. So this book makes a convenient, handy dictionary as well.I feel that in the years ahead, as my grasp of Greek improves, there is no book other than the Greek text itself that will prove to be as essential as this grey book.

If you've never studied Koine Greek ("common" Greek—the form of ancient Greek language in which most of the New Testament is written), this book is a good place to start. One valuable feature in this book is that Greek vocabulary words are listed in order of frequency of use in the New Testament. After you've used this book to build your vocabulary knowledge, I would recommend that you get a copy of Greek: An Intensive Course, by Hardy Hansen and Gerald M. Quinn. In my opinion, this is probably the best Greek Grammar textbooks available right now. The fact that its weakness is the lack of a decent amount of vocabulary words is remedied by studying Trenchard's book first. After you've mastered the material in these two books, you will be ready to read the Greek New Testament.

Printing mid-book makes a few words a bit unclear. However, for this price and given the general consistency of the quality of print, this is a great value. As a starter vocab for a student of Greek, this is a great resource.

An accessible and thorough guide for any greek student. The word families are especially helpful. And you just can't beat the price- extremely worthwhile investment!

To those who purchase a book by its cover: this is not a Greek lexicon of the NT! You can find such a book by Zondervan that might serve your purposes. I assumed that this book was perhaps a new twist on the old theme; it is not. Instead, it is far more useful to me in that the multitude of lists are excellent for memorization. The fact that all prepositions and their definitions are listed in one place is worth the price of this book by itself! You will find this list is near the very back of the book, along with a list of all counting numbers used in the NT (why not add the few more?). Proper nouns are listed in the back, which I find quite interesting. In fact, I have found the lists in the back section of the book more interesting than anything else at this point. This book is so well organized that I can pick it up daily and review; yes, it now has a permanent place in my bathroom! Why only four stars? There is one page that did not print well in the frequency lists (down around pi-words occurring only once in the NT). The Greek words themselves are obscured. I will consult other sources to reconstruct the list, since it will be too painful to return the book.

Great Greek guide! One of the most exhaustive guides to Greek words, their use, the number of times they appear in scripture, and their contextual meaning.

I would recommend this text to any student learning the Greek vocabulary. Trenchard included additional which aids are a plus.
