From School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Burcaw answers the most common questions he gets about having a disability. He was born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which makes his muscles grow weaker throughout his life and his body smaller as he ages. A range of questions, from "What's wrong with you?" to "How do you play with your friends," are answered in a concise yet thorough way. Burcaw takes a humorous approach towards each topic, such as comparing himself to a T. rex when discussing why his head is bigger than the rest of his body. Additionally, he describes his wheelchair as working with a joystick "sort of like a video-game controller." This ultimately serves to emphasize that though Burcaw may look different, he is a person whom kids can empathize with. The discussion of his family's help and how it feels to be made fun of will allow readers to more fully understand what it is like to live with a disability. The pages are visually pleasing, with brightly colored photographs of Burcaw accompanying bold graphics and speech bubbles. An author's note at the end goes into greater detail about SMA and Burcaw's work as a disability rights activist. VERDICT This slim book packs a punch and can serve as a good introduction for students about people with disabilities.—Kathryn Justus, Renbrook School, West Hartford, CT

“This slim book packs a punch and can serve as a good introduction for students about people with disabilities.†―School Library Journal“Burcaw’s tone is breezy, matter-of-fact, and humorous, and he’s got an accessible and mischievous persona . . . The combination of approachable photographs and informative text makes this highly valuable for solving kids’ essential conundrum of wanting to understand a disability without rudely quizzing people.†―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books“Questions are posed . . and answered with blunt clarity and humor. Readers get to know [Shane] on many levels as really not so different at all.†―Booklist“Straightforward . . . Humorous . . . A candid, approachable resource for curious kids.†―Kirkus Reviews

I held back the tears as I read, processing the emotions that the words and pictures brought for me. We could relate to every word.Shane has always worked to show the beauty and laughter in life and living the one you were given to the fullest. My husband and I, our parents, friends and sons care givers all found such hope, peace and humor in reading Shane’s chapter book (Laughing At My Nightmare,) after our son’s diagnosis. It helped us to see that diagnosis didn’t need to mean doom. Life is beautiful. Shane’s story helped shape our goals for our son, to laugh, love and live. I’ve since been searching for books that touch on physical disabilities or any story book for children that include children in chairs or with limitations. They exist and for that I am thankful, however I feel we need more. The world needs to see that living with a disability is reality and learn that it’s ok to ask, it’s ok to engage.Shane’s newest title, “Not So Different†is brilliant, straight forward, educational and real. The very first children’s book that I felt I as a mother could relate to. I will be sharing this book with everyone in our son’s life. Education, diversity and inclusivity needs to be seen and taught to all ages. This book is for everyone.
Shane has done it again! This book is light-hearted yet it hits incredibly pertinent topics. I bought this book for myself and for three of my friends (who are all early ed teachers). Children need to be educated about disability. All too often, children are socialized to feel uncomfortable about disabilities which perpetuates the idea that those with disabilities are "others" that one shouldn't talk to or ask questions about. Shane's book can geneuinly change this. The photography in this book is also amazing! It really completes the whole thing. I certainly commend Mathew Carr. Great job to both of you!
I pre-ordered this, and it finally arrived today. I just read it with my six-year-old, and she was fascinated. She has a physical disability herself, but hers is different. She is often curious about people in wheelchairs, and this book was a great way for her to get the answers to questions she might be wondering. As a parent, I love for her to hear from someone else who has physical differences like she does. Keep up the good work, Shane. You are awesome.
Fantastic book for kids about people with disabilities. I'm a kindergarten teacher and I NEVER buy a book without being able to look at it first. I am so glad I made this purchase and I can't wait to read it to my students. I'm so happy I found Shane and Hannah's YouTube channel Squirmy and Grubs!
Wonderful book that teaches children about having disabilities. My son has SMA, just like Shane, and I am so thankful for this book, and the lesson it teaches: that being different is ok. Shane is an amazing author! His humor and honestly is so refreshing.
I hope parents will find this book and share with their kids. Kids have the right idea wanting to ask questions and learn more even if they don't understand how to be tactful. Perhaps a little practice on the subject will help parents set a little less awkward example the next time around and keep their kids from missing out on meeting wonderful people like the author.
Great read for children showing them what it's like in Shane's Burcaw life and answering typical questions children may have about him! Plus the Humor along with it helps! Highly recommend this book!
It was well-written on a child's level. My granddaughters love reading it.
