This book is a must-have for anyone working in Early Intervention or with preschoolers. It includes detailed, readable information on speech/language development and specific activities to facilitate speech and language in the home environment. Plus it provides a concise overview of key issues in the care of children with clefts – feeding, hearing acuity, surgery, and dental care.This is a required text for my graduate course in cleft palate-craniofacial disorders. However, students continue to use the ideas in out-placements and work settings. Students say this book crystallizes concepts detailed in their other required texts. Excellent and current information. Great resource book
My primary reason for reading this is, I loved reading Your Child in the Hospital so much. Even though I don't feel the same way about this book, I'd be hard pressed to say that this isn't filled with great information. In fact, I even learned about a few things.The chapter about on CP, CL, and CPL provided the symptoms and ways to tell them apart. I feel this would be helpful because, these are situations where you need to what condition your child has before treatment. This could also be applied to the chapters on AOM and OME.I feel the chapters on speech would be helpful for determining estimated times for when your child should speak. It might reduce the chance of a freak-out if you notice your child isn't saying "mama" when you would like.All of the learning activities they provided seemed fun and easy to follow.I'm glad that they mentioned the subject of bullying because, every child should be made aware of this before starting public school. Of course, I have to wonder why the CDC has an article on this subject. I didn't think that bullying was a disease. For the record, I don't consider social disease a legitimate term.At first, I wanted to add them mentioning the Internet as a good thing since they recommended a few websites. That stemmed me from me noticing that some experts warn against using the Internet even though that's one way to find out about them. However, they do the same thing after recommending some websites. I guess having a degree following your name or being part of an organization means you're infallible. That aside, if you read something on the Internet, you should verify it. By that, I mean checking several sources. (That includes my reviews because, I might make a mistake.)On a final note, I waned to offer one caveat. If you're going to buy baby products, just be aware that there's a lot of nonsense floating around. A case in point is the Mozart Effect. Those studies were performed on adults, not children. In addition, their IQs were raised for 15-20 minutes.
