From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—An unnamed boy is forced to consider the consequences of his actions in this cautionary tale about making responsible choices. The narrator commits a series of seemingly minor offenses, such as feeding popcorn to the bears in the zoo, throwing an empty soda can out the car window, sneaking a lick of frosting from a wedding cake, and interrupting the librarian during storytime. Each time, an angry adult admonishes him by asking, "What if everybody did that?" causing him to envision the possible outcomes: sick animals, garbage strewn along the highway, a ruined cake, and chaos at the library. Each spread depicts a different episode. The art on the verso shows the boy committing a thoughtless act, and the recto pictures show what could happen if everyone broke the rules. Madden's experience as a greeting-card illustrator is evident in the variety of expressions shown on the faces of the multicultural cast in the colorful mixed-media drawings. This title could be a useful purchase for libraries looking to add to their collections of character-building books.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT (c) Copyright 2010. My 3yo loves this book. I thought it was going to be one of those books I read her once and she never wanted to see again, and I bought it anyway because I thought it was an important lesson. But the illustrations are so much fun, she has me read it to her all the time. So much so that I am beginning to tire of it. She likes being asked to explain each page. It doesn’t seem to have had any impact on her behavior yet, but time will tell. There are three pages I have trouble with:-The page with the story reader at the library is confusing for her, because the story readers at our library encourage interactivity. I turn it into a lesson on interrupting, rather than just talking during storytime, as it is presented.-The page about running onto the field AFTER a football game shows a what-if-everybody running onto the field DURING a football game. I crossed out "after" and wrote in "during".-The page on snowball fights paints all snowball fights as bad. But snowball fights were a cherished part of my childhood. I turn it into a lesson on consent. "I threw just one snowball at Sammy without asking him." Maybe once she is in school, I will go with the inappropriateness of snowball fights at school.

This has been on my wish list for a looooong time. Decided it was time to buy it because I've had some PBIS ideas floating around in my head for back to school. This story is going to be part of our kick off for learning the school standards. What if Everybody Did That? is all about community and remembering we all play a part in keeping our school, neighborhoods, and homes safe and happy places. If we don't think of others our surroundings and daily routines can quickly become chaotic. There are fourteen examples showing cause and effect example of behavior."During story time I had something important to say. I just couldn't wait till the end of the story. The librarian put her finger to her lips and said, "What if everybody did that?" Then it shows a picture of kids erupting in chaos and chatter. The last example is a positive one. I was happy they ended on a good note and what a great way to start off your lesson and discussion. "When I came home I gave my mom a hug. What if everybody did that?"If you need a new resource to introduce routines, procedures, and school standards this is such a great reinforcer!

This book is great! We've only read it one time, but it has already helped the kiddies see things a little differently. I'm all about teaching my kids good morals early on. At ages 4 and especially 5, they really do understand that there is a right and wrong way of doing things. I absolutely recommend this book.

I read this with my third graders on my iPad projecting it with a document camera.. I left the print small so they had to study the pictures and think about what the problem was on each page by looking at what happened on the left side and what would happen if everyone did it on the right side. Then I'd enlarge the print and have someone read the page. It was a great story structure and the students are working hard to create a shortened version of their own. They have had a great time with this book!

I wish they would show the grown ups as a better example. Every page when it's the adults time to tell the kid "what if everyone did that", they seem angry and short with the child. My kids even expected the grown ups to find a patient inspiring way to teach the child, they were distracted by how angry most of the grown ups look, and also pointed out, why do only children get in trouble for things adults can get in trouble for. Yes, there are many senarios "what if everyone did that" in life, and hypothetically it is a great lesson to learn... but what if everyone just scolded a child for not knowing how to behave.... I wonder where the kids get it from? This booked helped me find more compassion to my kids and be a better parent by showing me how popular the latter is.

This is a great book to teach students about the effects that their choices can have on others and the environment. I use this every year in my 2nd grade classroom. It's really relatable for the students. After we read this, I have students choose something negative (or positive) that a person could do and then draw a picture of what it would look like if everybody did that. Since we do this at the start of the year, I also have sentence starters written up on the dry erase board or SmartBoard and students use them to write their story underneath the picture, such as "If everybody ______ then ______. The world would be a better place if ____."

We ordered 30 copies of this book for every classroom in out elementary school. Such a powerful question for children. The children correct themselves and each other... If they see a child do something inappropriate, voices will pop up, "What if everybody did that?" Great book to help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors.

I loved the illustrations in this book, but I don’t know if ebook is the best form to see them. I will admit that if I had read a print version of this book, my overall rating might have been higher. In ebook form, I felt that many of the details and finer points of the message were missed. Because the text never directly addressed the positive choices the “reader or child” was supposed to learn and depended so heavily on the illustration, I would not recommend this book in ebook form beyond individual/personal enjoyment. I imagine a print version going over well at an individual level as well as in a group setting. Overall, though, I appreciated the message and enjoyed the pictures.
