In Breakthrough, Allison Shaw and her team made a breakthrough discovery working with two very lovable dolphins, Sally and Dirk. In Leap, the team is in a new research facility in Puerto Rico. They make such a discovery that is better described as a leap in science and technology. This discovery will have them questioning what it means to be an animal and what it means to be a human. The world will never be the same after they're discovery. However, not everyone will want to see it used for the betterment of mankind. Some will want to use the discovery for their own selfish, tyrannical and evil purposes. A thousand miles away surveillance has identified a mysterious vessel off the coast of Guyana. U.S. Naval investigators John Clay and Steve Caesare are dispatched to uncover it's true intent. They learn that someone has made the discovery of the century that could change life for every person on the planet and there are those prepared to go to war over it. You will see the normal greed aspect that fuels research and discovery. But you will also see, in rather poetic terms, that desperation also fuels research and discovery. Relationships blossom, new friends are made and, as with real life, we must say good bye to others.Leap is an exciting sequel to Michael Grumley's Breakthrough. I was highly anticipating this sequel and was not disappointed. Leap continues the Breakthrough story line but it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. However, Breakthrough will give you some foundation that will deepen your understanding and give you a richer reading experience. I read Leap in one sitting, I could not put it down. This novel is full of leaps. Not small leaps but huge leaps in science and technology. There is great quote in this book that made me think about our society: "'How well do you believe your people would handle a true leap in knowledge, given their current use of fission and fusion devices? How well would they manage frequencies that can heal as well as harm? Mr. Borger, ingenuity is the ultimate gift of humankind. And conquest is the ultimate curse. They cannot be separated. Not yet. Not until you face the gravest threat to your planet's existence. Until you face mortality as a species, not as individuals. Only then can you glimpse true wisdom.'" These leaps are not overly done and are very realistic. We are facing some of these issues today! There is rich character development. He builds upon the relationships in the first novel. There are even leaps in those relationships. You will fall in love with the characters, especially the nonhuman ones. If Sally and Dirk won your heart in Breakthrough, you will totally fall in love with them in Leap! However, save some room in your heart for a couple more very special creatures. No, I am not going to tell you about them, no spoilers here. You must read the book. The book made me want more. The wonderful plot development and very fine tuned ending will make you think there just might be more coming! For me the mark of a great story is that it will stimulate the mind and move the heart! Leap is that kind of story. The story had me thinking about the implication of such discoveries. It made me feel like I personally knew the characters. It elicited many emotions on many different levels.Leap, along with Breakthrough, Amid the Shadows and Evan After, is a good indicator that Michael Grumley is quickly moving to the front of the line of great story tellers. He continues to give us great story lines, lovable characters and believable science. He weaves all this into a story that makes you think about the human condition. Read it, you'll be glad you did.

What a concept. This is a mixture of hard-core science, fantasy, action, espionage and romance all rolled into one. The idea of communicating with dolphins from the first Breakthrough book goes one step farther to communication with a gorilla. We all know about Koko, and she gets a mention, but this gorilla (Dulce) isn't signing, she's "talking:" just like the dolphins, with the help of a super computer. Kicking it up a notch, the gorilla proves she can do a cross-species chat with a capuchin monkey. Interesting concept since they're from different continents.Meanwhile, back in the water, a new vest is created to take the talking-to-dolphins on the road. Or should I say under the ocean? It's a big success. Ali is swarmed by hundreds of excited dolphins glad to chat with her, overwhelming the computer system and causing a failure. Oops! Should have anticipated that, don't you think? If that wasn't enough excitement for one story, it seems the Chinese are doing some mysterious night-time excavations in Guyana and keeping their operations a secret from the whole world. The Russians have "lost" a submarine in the same vicinity as these mysterious Chinese excavations. A Brazilian billionaire is searching for a monkey's birthplace, which ends up being surprisingly close to the Chinese excavations. It all comes to a surprising conclusion. Or does it, really? Another visit from Palin leaves you with some insight to where the story leads. Or maybe not.I'm definitely enjoying the "Breakthrough" series. It's an eclectic mix of genres with strong characters (in totally unrealistic plots!) that I just can't help but love. The good guys are incredibly good and I really enjoyed disliking the bad guys. I'm looking forward to book three and have just discovered there's a book four!

*spoilers*I am about half way through and I’m planning to give up. It’s rare I don’t finish a book, but I can’t bring myself to read any more. Am I the only one puzzled at how a dolphin who carried a nuclear bomb into a spinning ring in the ocean is suddenly alive again? Or how there’s no mention of this at all? The female characters are all pretty stupid for being supposedly smart. Who jumps on a plane with a gorilla in your care after hearing a sketchy story from a man you never met before without doing ANY due diligence?! Oh, because all women are suckers driven by crushes on boys we met years ago.Premise seems good, but the character work is sloppy and there’s not enough logic to support decisions made - including the haphazard “scientific” studies conducted. I couldn’t stomach anymore of this series. A pity because while the first book did have some of these flaws, I expected an improvement in the second - not a deterioration.

I read the first book in the series awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed it! Last week I was browsing my Kindle for a new book and noticed Leap. Started it and blew totally through Books 3 and 4 all in about a week as I couldn't put them down! Love that it is both sci-fi, but also present day and reality. The characters are all intertwined with lots of action and adventure. Definitely recommend and can't wait for the continuation of the series!
