Cliff is an assiduous digger and has unearthed plenty of nuggets to help his story of Van Cliburn's Moscow triumph fizz along. He is particularly good at explaining the political context of the moment: the Soviet Union, still struggling to recover from the horrors of World War Two, was a paranoid place in the 1950s and yet Communist Party Khrushchev, while suspicious of the United States, was canny enough to see the value of a young American triumphing in a contest most people assumed had been rigged. Cliff is also good at explaining Van Cliburn's musical gifts and dedication in such a way that it doesn't put off novices (such as myself) or sound condescending to those more immersed in the topic. What does come across is quite how hard Van Cliburn worked and how gregarious he was, which helped him make friends in Russia.
I guess I've been a Cliburn fan since about age 14. I was one of the originals who got into classical music through his Tchaikovsky concerto recording. During the last decade, I lived in Ft. Worth, Texas -- where he is a favorite son. I never heard him play during those years, but I did hear him speak on a couple of occasions. He had a great heart and was, from my seat, a Texas gentleman. I bought the Kindle version of this book (suggested to me by my musician sister) and have found it to be a fascinating read. It places Cliburn in the political turmoil of the times. I had no idea that Kruschev loved him so dearly...like a son. Van did for musical diplomacy what Rubinstein, Horowitz, Janis and others could not do because he was virtually owned by the hearts of the Soviet people. He was a good guy who kept his dignity through trying circumstances. It's all very interesting. If you are interested in the most unique chapter of the Cold War...read this book.
Van Cliburn was such a huge story at the time of his 1958 victory, that they couldn't publish a book about him fast enough. Hence, the appearance of Chasins' "Van Cliburn Legend". That is exactly what it was, too. A "let's make it go THIS way" book. Howard Reich"s "Van Cliburn" was really no different, except that Cliburn had lived 30 more years by the time that book was published. Nigel Cliff's "Moscow Nights", along with Isacoff's "When the World Stopped to Listen" is the first real attempt to put Cliburn's life--and contribution to history--into a perspective that approaches realistic. Cliff has a considerable understanding of why the planets were aligned to launch a Van Cliburn into outer space along with sputnik, and he lavishes many pages on historical perspective, which is necessary reading, if one wishes to truly understand Cliburn's great achievement. Cliff is sympathetic--a bit too much so--to Cliburn's ghosts and foibles, and is so doing, leaves the realm of objectivity. He also suffers from not quite enough knowledge about the music world at the time, making the reader feel his approach to musical things and personalities can be a bit shallow, even if he does well with historical and political perspective. We have yet to see a truly objective, in-depth research of Van Cliburn, his genius, his achievements, and his humanness.
I really enjoyed this biography. Van Cliburn is one of my heroes. What was a delightful surprise was the in-depth inclusion of history of the USSR, Khrushchev, the politics of the time and between the USA and USSR. It gave a deeper understanding of Van Cliburn's being caught between two cultures and his love for Russian music and the people there. He did his best to be apolitical, although he was often used for political purposes on both sides. This was a great read.
Excellent biography with a good background of the Cold War politics that surrounded Van Cliburn's attendance at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. I was amazed at the responses of both governments. Especially notable was that the competition with Russia was responsible for American support of the Arts for the first time. Van Cliburn was single minded in his devotion to music, especially the Russian Romanticism. The music was also covered in detail so I am somewhat surprised about the criticism elsewhere that this aspect wasn't up to par in this bio. I can only think that the criticism came from professional musicians. For regular people who love classical music, this is a fine biography from cradle to the grave, of a amazing pianist. Van Cliburn truly made a impact doing what he loved.
One of my earliest musical memories is hearing our recording of Van Cliburn playing the Tchaikovsky piano concerto and winning this competition in Moscow in the late '50s. This book retells the story of this musician, his early life, the competition and his magnificent career following. Van Cliburn is an American institution and testament to the power of music to overcome political, ideological and geographical borders and differences in a divided world. I was lucky enough to hear him play live on two occasions. This book provides a concise, easy to read account of this marvelous life and provides a unique perspective to what we call the cold war. I highly recommend this book.
I never appreciated Van Cliburn. I was not educated in classical music and I was only 13 when he won his prize. This excellent biography introduced me to him and let me see what I had missed. I am sorry that I never heard him play. I am glad that I finally learned about him and his glowing life.
